Rare Camaros

While almost any first generation Camaro can be considered relatively unique, there are a few cars, models, and options that qualify as really rare. In this section we'll explore some of them. First of all, there are several Regular Production Options that are relatively rare, with less than 500 produced. While these particular options don't really increase the car's value, they are rare. The 1967 Z/28 can be considered rare, with only 602 produced.  Any Camaro with the L89 engine is a rare car. This was the aluminum head 396 engine, which sold 272 units in '68, and another 311 in '69.  Another rare option is the JL8 4-wheel disc brake setup. There were only 206 factory equipped JL8 cars sold, but there were many more with the service package rear end from the dealer installed.  Original JL8 rear    axle is tapered.Service package rear axle is larger, no taper.

In addition, factory JL8 cars used 11-3/4 inch front rotors, while regular cars used an 11 inch rotor.

Moving on down the line of rare Camaros, we come to the special dealer prepared cars. One of the first dealers to build high performance Camaros was Baldwin Chevrolet in conjunction with Motion Performance. There were soon several hundred 427 Phase III Baldwin Motion Camaros rolling off the lot, although the exact number is unknown. It is believed that all the cars had a broad stripe running from front to rear down the middle of the car, as well as a special hood scoop. In 1969 the 427 Phase III Camaro listed for $4,998.95. In addition to the big block cars, Motion also built several Phase III Z/28's, which included Mallory ignition, dual electric fuel pumps, tuned equal length headers, special hood scoop, Scheifer Rev-Lok clutch and aluminum flywheel, and a Lakewood scattershield. 

Dana Chevrolet was founded by Peyton Cramer, and named after a street, Dana Avenue. Dana Chevrolet built 427 Camaros from 1967 through 1969, but the cars remain a mystery today. It is not known how many were built.

What is exactly the hydraulic lifters?

Hydraulic lifters are able to deteriorate from tear and wear or the buildup of sludge and contaminants in engine oil in 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1. Lifter springs become more weak or not any longer travel the full path to come back valves to the closed position. Made by exhaust or intake valves, the telltale clacking sound is evidence of old hydraulic lifters and needs to be checked instantly. However, the new hydraulic lifters can make the engine run quieter and smooth in 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1, and the lifters are reasonable and inexpensive simple to instead of the right tools and some mechanical experience. Here are some tips to help your vehicle-1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1.

1.Get rid of the upper engine area from obstructions such as wires and air ducts to allow removal of the parts. And remove any electrical connections and linkages from the distributor and intake manifold. What’s more, to remove bolts from the outer lip of valve covers, you can use a flat, wide bladed tool, such as the scraper to pry valve covers loose. By observing the rocker arms and using the timing mark for number 1 cylinder, you bring your engine to the top center positon. On the top dead center, they are fully closed to valves. You should notice the differences in location and length when you remove intake manifold bolts in 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1. Pry the edge of intake upwards to loose the manifold by using caution not to break cylinder head surfaces.

2.In opening cavity, lay a coup of rags below intake manifold to catch the debris. It then carefully cleans the worn intake manifold gasket materials of cylinder heads. you can remove some heavier materials by using a gasket scraper. If it is necessary, you can remove the lighter materials by using a wire brush and solvent. That you can ensure the material is not left and the head surface becomes more brighter to 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1.

3.Until the rockers which are far enough to release the push rods can easily be turned to the side, you can loosen rocker-arm retaining nuts. And then remove every push rod. It also can inspect for wear or damage. Through the center of rod, make sure the oil passage is clear. Record their order when the rods are installed if they are different lengths. From its passageway, you can use the strong magnet in order to remove each hydraulic lifter.

4.If you need to install a new lifter by dropping it into the lifter passage, you must ensure it is able to turn 360 degrees for free in the passage. Until the lifter is in contact with valve step, you can place rocker arms over the top, reinstall the push rods, and tighten rocker nuts.

5.Install the new gasket for intake manifold around water passages with gasket sealer. And replace the torque and intake bolts to manufacturers specifications for 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1.

6.Shut the engine down and remove valve covers. You tighten to manufacturer’s specifications and replace the bolts. Start the engine and reattach some additional engine connectors, accessories or linkages in 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1. Finally, you need to check the oil of the coolant leaks and observe the temperature from 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1, before you first drive it.

How does the 1967-69 Camaro low fuel indicator work?

The low fuel indicator is a small round plastic can containing four wires that is in the gauge package. It is not crucial to the operation of the gauges. In fact, many gauge clusters removed them when they were not functional. The module plugs into the fuel gauge for power, signal, and ground. There is a fourth yellow wire that comes from the module that goes to the dash through the console harness and the dash harness console extension to activate a light in the instrument cluster. However, here is where the problem arises.

The 1967 low fuel module operates by sending a 12 volt power signal on the yellow wire to a single contact bulb mounted in the dash cluster underneath the circuit board. The bulb has grounding tangs that ground the bulb through the instrument cluster body.

The 1968 low fuel module operates by sending a ground signal on the yellow wire to one of the 12 pin instrument cluster connector contacts. This subsequently lights a low fuel indicator bulb through the circuit board connection on the back of the cluster. This circuit board is different for a warning light versus a factory console gauge car.

The 1969 low fuel module operates by sending a ground signal on the yellow wire to a bulb located in the instrument cluster light pods at the bottom of the dash.

The low fuel modules are not interchangeable.

Note: These are used for comparison. There are many documented cars which do not fall into these guidelines. Anything could have happened on the assembly line.

Other changes occurred in the '69 model year. Early '69 Z/28s used a Y55 top post battery, but Chevy went to a side post Y77 in February. A few months later this was replaced by the Y89, which used the same bolt size for the positive and negative terminals.
The Z/28 got single piston calipers on the disc brakes, as opposed to the four piston calipers in '67 and '68. You could also order the factory 4 wheel disc brake systerm, RPO JL8, but there were problems with parts availability during the year, and there were several stop orders issued, delaying delivery of the cars.
The console and guages were the same as used in 1968, but the woodgrain pattern was different. In 1969 rosewood replaced walnut on all the woodgrain accents.
The stripes were larger on the rear deck in '69 than on previous years. You could also order your Z/28 with the stripes deleted.

The Z/28 became a legend almost from the start. While the new Camaros are wonderful cars, there is nothing quite like a 1969 Z/28!

One of America’s favorite pony cars, the Camaro has an interesting past with more than a few buried facts and secrets hiding just below the radar. Here are five of our favorites:

1. The Camaro was almost called the Panther — It took a while for Chevrolet to come up with a final name for the Camaro. For quite some time it was referred to internally as the Chevrolet Panther. In end, Chevy’s preference for names beginning with a “C” won out, and the Panther name died as part of an elaborate PR campaign.
2. The Camaro was actually a Canadian Import — Like William Shatner and Michael J. Fox, the seemingly All-American Camaro was actually stealth Canadian. From 1993-2002, the Camaro and its twin, the Pontiac Firebird, were built in St. Thérèse, Quebec, a Montreal suburb.
3. “Camaro” means nothing — The name was actually a contrived moniker, much like “Camry” and “Corolla.” Although some claim that it is French slang for “friend,” neither the GM product people (nor most French-speakers, for that matter) are aware of this.
4. “Outpaced” the Mustang — Although the Camaro came 2½ years after the Mustang and was often outsold by the Mustang, it has a healthy lead in the Indianapolis 500. The Camaro has been the official pace car at Indy six times, versus just three for the Mustang. Only the Corvette (12) has paced more 500s than the Camaro.
5. Current Base V-6 Puts V-8s of old to shame — Amazing as it may seem, the 2013 base six-cylinder engine, at 323 hp, puts out more ponies than the most powerful small-block V-8 in the original car (295 hp). In fact, it probably makes nearly as much power as the fiercest big block V-8 of 1967, the 396 cubic inch, 375 hp. In modern “net horsepower” (measured with mufflers and accessories hooked up), the new six and the old big-block V-8 are probably just about even.
