Camaro’s new 3.6L direct injection V-6 – the LFX engine - Steve's Camaro Parts San Bruno


The first Camaros with GM’s new LFX V6 engine are now being delivered to our site members, and the first pictures of it have been posted.
To recap, the Camaro’s new 3.6L direct injection V6 LFX engine went into production beginning this summer. It delivers an SAE-certified 323 horsepower (241 kW) at 6,800 rpm and an increase of 11 horsepower (8 kW) over the 2011 V6 engine, with no compromise in fuel economy.
The LFX delivers the most standard power in the regular sports car segment. It is also 20.5 pounds (9.3 kg) lighter than its predecessor. EPA-estimated highway fuel economy for the LFX V6 Camaro is 30 mpg (2LS model).

The LFX delivers the most standard power in the regular sports car segment. It is also 20.5 pounds (9.3 kg) lighter than its predecessor, which promotes a more balanced driving experience. EPA-estimated highway fuel economy for the ’12 Camaro is 30 mpg (2LS model).

Compared to the 3.6L V-6 in 2011 models, the new LFX engine features:
  • New cylinder head design with integrated exhaust manifold
  • Improved intake port design and larger intake valves within the cylinder heads
  • Longer-duration intake camshafts
  • Composite intake manifold
  • New fuel pump and isolated fuel rail
  • New, optimized-flow fuel injectors
  • Structural front cover and cylinder block enhancements
  • Stronger and lighter-weight connecting rods
  • Camshaft cap and throttle body design enhancements.

Direct injection is the key technology enabling the engine’s combination of power and efficiency. It optimizes fuel delivery to the combustion chamber by introducing fuel closer to the combustion chamber. The result is better efficiency in the combustion process leading to increased fuel efficiency at part and full throttle. It also uses a new fuel pump for the direct injection system, along with a new, isolated fuel rail. The new fuel pump is quieter, while the isolated fuel rail further reduces fuel system noise.

First 2012 Transformers Camaro - Steve's Camaro Parts


The very first 2012 Transformers 3 Package Camaro special edition was introduced at last week’s Woodward dream cruise and of course our members have posted the very first photos of this special edition Camaro.

In conjunction with the 2012 Transformers Camaro’s public debut, GM has profiled the Transformer packages’ designer - Adam Barry, Senior Creative Manager, Corvette and Camaro, Accessories and Specialty Builds. He has been responsible for overseeing the design of the Camaro’s various special editions and packages, including the various Transformer editions.

You don’t have to speak Cybertronian to understand what’s so rad about the latest special edition Transformers package for the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro.

When this car shows up in your review mirror, you’ll definitely do a double take, and then some! Bold yellow paint with pumped up black stripes, a high-wing rear spoiler and black-on-black wheels… this car looks like Bumblebee, straight from the set of Transformers: Dark of the Moon. It’s enough to make Sam Witwicky‘s heart beat fast.

“It’s so cool to see little five-year olds standing in front of the car saying, ‘Wake up, wake up.’ And, I’ll ask them, ‘Who do you want to wake up?’ And, they’ll say ‘Bumblebee,’” says Adam Barry, Senior Creative Manager, Corvette and Camaro, Accessories and Specialty Builds.

A self-described “Transformers geek” who still has his Autobot action figures, Barry says that when he found out about the project, he jumped all over it. “There’s no question that this specialty package was designed by someone who loves, Transformers,” says Barry.
It’s the little details — like Cybertronian symbols spelling “Transformers” on the spoiler, Autobot logos on the wheel caps and front quarter panel and an awesome interior with black leather seats and bright yellow stitching — that give this Chevrolet extra attitude.

“When you see this car,” says Barry, “you’re not going to think it’s a car, you’re going to think it is Bumblebee… and you’re going to be looking around for the other Autobots. How cool is that?” Plus, if any Decepticons show up, you’ll be able to handle them.

You can order the Transformers Specialty package now. It’s due in dealerships in September.

Wiring Harness Replacement - Steve's Camaro Parts




Let's face it folks, auto makers never designed a wiring harness to last 30-50 years. As a matter of fact, your car's wiring was only designed to last 10 years before it deteriorates! There is ample documentation to substantiate this claim.

Your car's wiring was made of copper with a plastic insulation. The plastic insulation was porous. Contaminants, like oxygen, moisture and airborne pollutants, eventually pass through the insulation to attack the wire; a condition called oxidation. There is no practical way to completely seal off the circulation of air and moisture between the individual wire strands. Once the wire strands become oxidized, the internal resistance of the wire increases substantially. This is not a good thing for your car's electrical system.

If your wire has reached the next stage of deterioration by becoming brittle and cracked, it is in immediate need of replacement. At this stage, a short circuit to ground is eminent. In a worst case scenario, it can cause a fire.

Even if you are one of the few lucky enough to even find an N.O.S. wiring harness, these wire strands will have also deteriorated over time just by sitting on a shelf. For this reason, it would not be wise to purchase an N.O.S. harness.

The same corrosion factor happens to the wire's terminals over time.

First 45th Anniversary Camaro Convertible - Steve's Camaro Parts



The 45th Anniversary Special Edition commemorates both Camaro’s lineage and its 21st-century revival. It was revealed to the public for the very first time at our Camaro5Fest II this past April in Arizona. The anniversary package is offered on Camaro’s top two trim levels (2LT and 2SS) for both coupe and convertible body styles.

The exterior signature of the 45th Anniversary Special Edition is its unique rally stripe, in red and silver, that contrasts the Carbon Flash Metallic paint. The package also includes:

1966-1971 Trans-Am Cars: 2011 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion - Steve's Camaro Parts

The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is part of the Pebble Beach Concours weekend, and last weekend's classic races have already brought out braces of Can-Am cars, Jaguars new and old, and these Trans-Am cars from the heyday of the muscle car, from 1966 to 1971.

Created by the SCCA, the Trans-Am series brought the musclecar era into full flourish, even lending its name to the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. It made names like Donohue, Gurney, Penske and Parnelli Jones household names--if you were lucky enough to grow up in that kind of household.

A Demanding Race Circuit

Few racing circuits present as difficult a challenge to drivers and cars as does Mazda Raceway
Laguna Seca. Its 2.238 mile length and 300 foot elevation change includes 11 turns, highlighted by the notorius " corkscrew." In operation since 1957, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is one of the world's premier racing circuits.

Steve's Camaro Parts - Camaro ZL1 to have more than 570HP


Sources close to the SAE testing of the 2012 Camaro ZL1 has said that the ZL1 will come in at over 570 horsepower. Original estimates were somewhere around 550 horsepower (based on the similarity to the CTS-V). The ZL1 will also likely be getting the Corvette ZR1′s Traction Management System to help heavy-footed operators keep the car on the road and not in the ditch.
We’ll see how this shakes out and make sure to give you the official SAE verified numbers when they’re released. This comes at an interesting time with the rumor of the 2012 GT500 having 650 Horsepower. The horsepower wars should be a fun thing to watch.

Steve's Camaro Parts - Camaro again tops Mustang and Challenger in May Sales


May 2011′s sales numbers are in from the major automotive players in the performance rear wheel drive car segment. Good news, as the Camaro continues to stay on top, above the Mustang, Challenger, and 370Z.
While the Camaro sales are down from last month, they’re up 5.8% from May 2010.
Here are the May 2011 Sales Numbers:
Camaro: 9,451 units
Mustang: 6,607 units
Challenger: 3,418 units
370Z: 847 units

Steve's Camaro Parts - Fans Invade the Oshawa Plant in Canada



In June hundreds of Camaro & Firebird Owners have begun arriving at the Oshawa Assembly Plant. According to GM Spokesman Tony LaRocca, GM’s Oshawa plant has produced over 3.6 million camaros (from 1966 until today).
This weekend, there is a large gathering of fans going to the plant, with thousands of people going through the Plant Tour, showing where and how the current zeta body Camaro is produced & assembled.
“People are emotionally attached to the Camaros,” LaRocca said. “This car has had a huge emotional impact on people.”
Organizers have said that they expect to see 800+ Camaros and Firebirds make the journey to attempt to create a Guiness World Record, a Mosiac photo of the cars in the shape of the Iconic Chevrolet Bowtie.

This information is needed if you are ordering a reproduction bumper or purchasing a used bumper, or evaluating a 1967 or 1968 Camaro for originality.

Similarities and Differences
The front bumpers on the 1967 and 1968 Camaro are almost identical, but they are not fully interchangeable. While the bumper stamping itself is the same, there are different mounting holes machined into the stamping for each year.

Figures 1a and 1b show the center of the front bumper. The 1967 bumper, part number 3886690, has one hole for mounting the front license plate holder to the bumper. The 1968 bumper, part number 3929954, has 2 extra holes for mounting a bracket and rubber bumper.

The 1967 bracket extends down to the lower part of the bumper, interfacing with a mounting hole in that location. The 1968 bumper mounts at the end only with a topside bolt, redesigned from 1967, changed to use rubber cushions.
 
 


While they are similar, due to mounting hole differences, a 1967 Camaro front bumper can be mounted on a 1968 model only if the '68 center mounting pad is not installed. Likewise, a 1968 Camaro front bumper can be mounted on a 1967 model only if the '67 lower end brackets are left unattached.

Camaro Emission Systems
1969 System
Three emission control systems are found on 1967 through 1969 Camaros:

* The Air Injector Reactor (AIR) system pumped air into the exhaust manifold(s) to help complete the combustion process. The AIR system consisted of the air injection pump (aka smog pump), a fuel mixture control valve (1967) or an air diverter valve (1968-9), check valves, air manifold assembly, and air injection tubes (one per cylinder).
* The Controlled Combustion System (CCS) was introduced in 1968 and was used on cars that did not receive the AIR system. CCS improved combustion efficiency via recalibrated carburetor and distributor settings and higher operating temperatures (compared to 1967). The higher operating temperatures were accomplished by using a 195°F coolant thermostat (instead of 180°F) and the use of a thermostatically controlled air cleaner (ThermAC). The ThermAC system was designed to warm intake air to 100°F when underhood temperatures were less than 100°F. It consisted of a damper door mounted on the snorkel of the air cleaner which directed warm air from a heat stove on the exhaust manifold into the air cleaner.
* The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system utilized manifold vacuum to draw crankcase vapors into the engine to be burned. Filtered air was drawn through the engine, through the PCV valve, and into the intake manifold.
General Application
In 1967 (as in 1966), emissions equipment was required only on cars sold in California. The California cars were fitted with an AIR system (Regular Production Option (RPO) K19), and the PCV system (RPO K24). All engines equipped with K19 had unique engine codes due to the required holes in the exhaust manifold(s). Also, the L26 (230 ci L6) engines with K19 used a different distributor and the L30 (327 / 275hp) engines with K19 had a different initial timing. Note that smog equipment was not required on cars built in California but intended for sale in other states.

In 1968 and 1969, the California and federal emissions requirements were the same and all cars were built to the same 50-state standard. The AIR system was installed on all L6 cars with manual transmissions, all small blocks with manual transmissions, and all Camaros with big blocks. (Chevelles and full-size cars with the 396/325hp engine and TH400 transmission were the only 68-69 big block cars to not have smog pumps.) Only the automatic L6 and automatic small block Camaros did not have smog pumps, instead they had the simpler Controlled Combustion System. Generally speaking, an automatic car required less aggressive emission control than a manual transmission car because the engine load (and carburetor fuel metering consistency) was more stable and predictable.

In 1968, vehicles exported to Canada and other countries did not require the AIR system. RPO KD1 was used to delete the system (if it would have been so equipped otherwise) and 1/4"-18 NPSF straight pipe thread plugs were installed in the manifolds. It is unknown if a credit was issued on the Canadian window stickers for this delete. The Controlled Combustion System was still installed on the exported L6 automatic and small block automatic cars.

In 1969, Canadian cars used the same emission controls as U.S. cars.

PCV became standard on all Chevrolets in 1968 and is still used today on all cars.
